How to turn your house into a happy place

If you’re renting – especially in London – your decorating ideas, all those pinterest boards you’ve enthusiastically put together might not necessarily align with the owner’s vision, most commonly known as ‘THE contract’. My first landlord here in London asked me to get rid of my goldfish because there was a ‘no pets allowed’ clause stipulated in our agreement. I mean, seriously?! Asking to change the walls color (they were pink, for pink’s sake) or to drill a few holes to hang my paintings would’ve completely put him over the edge.

It’s hard to make a house feel like home when your hands are tied which is why you need to get creative. To be completely honest with you, I kinda wined about this for a couple of years while. Not anymore, though. I discovered little things I can do to make the house look more like me; personal touches that can transform bare corners in stylish sanctuaries.

1. Prized possessions on display. And I don’t mean diamonds, although my silk Balenciaga dress might as well be – that’s how much I love it. I have stacks of Vogue and Porter which I sometimes use as chairs, vintage jewelry resting on a cake plate, bags and shoes on bookshelves.

2. Art makes everything better. It can be paintings, drawings, sketches – anything that you find moving, that can inspire you, give you wings or ground you when you need a bit of extra help. My favorite outlet for powerful visuals is Minted. They play host to a community of independent artists and their fine art prints have brought my place to life.

3. Fresh flowers. Not a week goes by without buying fresh flowers. It’s something I’ve done for years and I love not just having them around the house but the ritual itself. I usually buy seasonal blooms although every time I end up at Columbia Flower Market I come back home with hydrangeas.
